I realized today that, from the time I was able to really grasp the concept of what a 'character' was, my life has revolved around various obsessions with fictional people, and places.
When I was 6 I cried because I thought Rita Repulsa was going to kill the Power Rangers.
In 5th grade, a few of us started our own Pokemon Trainers club, and made badges. Then the cards got banned, but we played anyway. The night I got my first Blastoise card, I didn't speak for 20 minutes, because I was in such awe of it.
When I was in the 6th grade, I skipped pep band to watch Dark Angel.
In 7th grade, I spent English class pretending I was in SeeD training, and writing in my journal about how much I wish I had friends like Squall, Irvine, Selphie, and the whole FF8 lot. Kendall, Sheena, and I became the 'Tri-Force.' Myself, Wisdom. Kendall, Power. Sheena, Courage.
In grade 8, we were still the same. I spent my free time writing strategies to defeat bosses in my guide book. I spent $55 on a Gameshark, so I could see the ending to FF8.
The summer after 8th grade, I read Interview With the Vampire for the first time, and it honestly changed my life. I remember staying up until 4 in the morning, sitting in bed, with my lamp on going, "This is what I wanted life to be." Just me and books, alone. When I finished it, I thought to myself, "That's the best thing I've ever read." And it still is. From then on, I ate, slept, and drank Vampire Chronicles. By the time Freshman year started, it had literally consumed me. Sophomore year, all I was able to talk about was Louis. I spent more time being Louis than I spent being myself. After reading those books, I realized that I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to have the oppurtunity to change someone's life, as Anne Rice had changed mine.
The people I met because of VC...well, nothing really needs to said other than I wouldn't be who I am today without those people.
Freshman year and Sophomore year, I also read Kushiel's Legacy. The writing style of Jacqueline Carey is the most beautiful I've come across. After reading only a bit of Kushiel's Dart, I was unable to role-play without incorporating a bit of that style for myself. I fell in love with the concepts of the books, and the characters. And while this obsession never reached even half that of the Vampire Chronicles, it's still high on my list.
Freshman year, I was exposed to the fandom of the anime Gravitation. Shortly after, Kendall decided that he was DETERMINED to actually *become* the lead character, Shuichi Shindou. And well, he's certainly on his way. The first character I ever RPed was from this series. Shuichi's best friend, Hiroshi Nakano. And while, upon first becoming a member of this fandom, I was in it more for the fact that it was centered around the relationship of two men, I later came to appreciate the complexities of each character, and began to see it as far more than just humourous 'Yaoi.'
In March of 2005, I was dragged into the fandom of Marvel comics. More importantly, the fandom of the Magneto line. Specifically? Pietro Maximoff. And while there are too many stories and series to be attached to in the world of comics, Quicksilver remains one of my favorite RP characters.
And then, though I had sworn I wouldn't, over the summer of 2005, I allowed myself to get wrapped into the hype of the newest Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince...I did. In a big way. And while I had always been a fan of the series, it was never in an extreme way. Perhaps because, when I had read the books, I had been younger, and not taken to them as much as I did the second time around. Over the course of 2 weeks, I re-read the series, just before the new book was to come out. By the release of Half Blood Prince, I was literally talking about Harry Potter every second I got. I had the entire book downloaded on my computer before it was even released in the states, courtesy of a friend in England. And, as things stand now, this obsession is only growing. By the time the premiere of the Goblet of Fire movie arrives November 18th, I'll have the full set of Slytherin school robes and uniform, a wand, and who knows what else. It's been my topic of conversation for months, and promises to remain high on the list for a very long time.
And now that this rambling has ceased, I'm off to post on a Marvel RP board.
